RESTAURANTS & PUBS

North Norfolk is awash with fantastic places to eat, you can expect to eat well in almost any village pub. Below are a few we have enjoyed or have been recommended by friends:

VERY CLOSE TO ST LUKE'S HOUSE

The Norfolk Riddle - Little Walsingham

Simple, tasty, reasonably priced food in an informal atmosphere. All the food grown/produced locally and served simply but well. The wine is reasonably priced and jugs of water are served without asking. They do not do a children's menu although children are welcome and they will sometimes do small portions. Book in advance for Fridays or Saturdays in high season. Weekday lunchtimes they have a very reasonable priced set menu.  (mains £9 - £13)

The Black Lion - Little Walsingham

www.blacklionwalsingham.com

This pub is on Friday Market Square - it is currently being renovated (August 2011).  Once this was a lovely pub which has been sadly neglected, the new landlady has big plans and what she has done so far looks great.  We didnt try the food, the menu is tapas style with a few main dishes.  It definitely looks like it is worth a try - we will on our next visit.  If you go let us know if you like it!

The Carpenters Arms - Wighton

T: 01328 820752 http://www.carpentersarmswighton.co.uk

This was a brilliant pub, now under new management - we were less impressed when we last went.  It is still good but not outstanding. (mains £8 - £12)

WITHIN A FEW MILES

The Ostrich Inn - South Creake

T: 01328 823320 http://www.ostrichinn.net

A huge restaurant offering high quality meals. This pub has various rooms and while the main bar part has the best atmosphere, other areas offer non-smoking dining. The choice ranges from lobster through traditional Norfolk crab to the likes of chilli con carne.

Turn right out of the house and immediately right down Guild St. Follow this road until you come to a cross roads. Go straight over the cross roads and stay on this road until the end. Turn left at the end and the Ostrich Inn is about half a mile and on the left hand size. There is ample car parking behind the pub. (mains £8 - £15)

The Jolly Farmers - North Creake

T: 01328 738185 http://www.jollyfarmers-northcreake.co.uk

Quite good with a very friendly feel about it.

The Hoste Arms - Burnham Market

01328 738777 www.hostearms.co.uk

Despite its pub façade, the Hoste Arms is more of a restaurant (and inn) and is a place to see and be seen in. The food is very good but not cheap and includes everything from gourmet burgers and liver and bacon to superb seafood. Like everywhere in Burnham Market, The Hoste is hugely busy so bookings advised, take note service can sometimes be slow. Huge heated outdoor area also available. (mains £12- £18)

The Globe - Wells (Butlands)

T: 01328 710206 http://www.holkham.co.uk/globe/

A more modern pub with separate dining and bar areas. More people drink than dine here but the food is reasonable with a variety of mains on offer like venison burgers, Cromer crabs and fish cakes.

The Crown - Wells (Butlands)

T: 01328 710209 http://www.crownatwells.co.uk/

Overlooking a lovely Georgian Square with a green in the middle. The food is good and there is a choice between the more formal dining room and the bar. I would recommend the bar but you cannot book tables in this area of the pub, so you need to arrive early.

Victoria Hotel - Holkham

T: 01328 711008 http://www.holkham.co.uk/victoria/restaurant.html

Summer barbecues and year-round bar meals. By Norfolk standards The Victoria is quite smart and is priced accordingly.

The Nelson - Burnham Thorpe

T: 01328 738241 http://www.nelsonslocal.co.uk/

We have not been, but have had good reports recently

The Deepdale Café - Burnham Deepdale

T: 01485 211055 http://www.deepdalecafe.co.uk/

This is excellent value for money and very good fun (you can take your own wine and only pay £2 corkage a bottle!), but it closes early, and is no good for dinner. The menu is simple but everything is good quality.

The Hero - Burnham Overy

20 MINS+ DRIVING
The Wiveton Café  - Wiveton

T: 01263 740515 http://www.wivetonhall.co.uk/cafe.htm

At Wiveton Hall there is the gorgeous Wiveton Café. This is a fantastic trip out in the summer as the Café is surrounded by pick your own fruit fields and the Café itself has the most amazing views over the marshes towards the sea. This is an absolute must. The food itself is pretty good, a fairly limited menu but good quality made from local produce, but the views are to die for. The Café is only open between about March and October during the day and in peak summer they open for some evenings.

The Duck - Stanhoe

www.duckinn.co.uk

This restaurant/pub was renovated early in 2011 and went under new management in July.  It is owned by Elgoods the brewery (good beer) and seems to be much improved.  The atmosphere was friendly and the service was good.  The food is not cheap, similar price and quality to The Hoste in Burnham Market but less pretencious.  Worth a visit.  (mains £12 to £20)

The Red Lion - Stiffkey

T: 01328 830552 http://www.stiffkey.com/

Another reasonably priced pub/restaurant with a small but appetising menu. Mains include scampi and Norfolk ham and eggs. They generally stop serving food by 9pm so get there early to avoid disappointment. (mains £6 - £10)

The Anchor Inn - Morston

T: 01263 741392

Seafood dominates the delicious evening menu with the likes of seabass, monkfish and prawns figuring prominently. There's also an affordable lunch-time menu and the cod chowder is a perfect winter warmer after a trip to see the seals.

Follow the directions to The Red Lion in Stiffkey but drive through Stiffkey into the next village, Morston. The Anchor is on the right hand side just after the sign to the quay on the left. Trips to see the seals at Blakeney run from here. (mains £8 - £20)

Morston Hall - Morston

T: 01263 741041 http://www.morstonhall.com/Dining

The Michelin-starred restaurant of local celebrity chef, Galton Blackiston. Superb food but you'll need to book well in advance. (approx. £90 per head including wine)

The Manor - Titchwell

T: 01485 210221 http://www.titchwellmanor.com/

Although this is a hotel, and not that close to St Luke's, the dining room is very nice, and the food excellent. We have been quite impressed recently.

Cookies - Salthouse

T: 01263 740352 http://www.salthouse.org.uk/

Excellent and very reasonable seafood. No licence, but you can take your own, or buy it at the pub nearby.

The Bell - Wiveton

T: 01263 740 101 http://www.wivetonbell.co.uk/

We have not been for some time, but get good reports of it.

The White Horse - Brancaster Staithe

T: 01485 210262 http://www.whitehorsebrancaster.co.uk/

Good food, and beautiful views of Brancaster Harbour.

Take-aways
The Norfolk Riddle offers take-away fish and chips and other cooked versions of what's normally for sale in the Farms Shop. Wells and Fakenham are also both home to numerous take-aways.
